WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A Wilmington 24-year-old who turned himself in and confessed to killing a homeless man will serve more than 18 years in prison.

Multiple media outlets report that Andrew Richard Berry pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement on Thursday. He was charged with first-degree murder and common law robbery in the death of Judson Lee Poland Jr.

The 48-year-old Poland was found unconscious with a head injury in an abandoned restaurant in January of 2013. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police had no suspects in the case until Berry walked into the Brunswick County Sheriff’s office last May and confessed to a detective he knew.

He was sentenced to between just over 18 years and 23 years in prison.
