ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - An Arlington prostitute who also led her own sex-trafficking ring has been sentenced to seven years in prison, far less than what prosecutors sought.

Thirty-five-year-old Ruth A. Miller, a Peruvian national, pleaded guilty back in 2013 to running a ring that operated throughout northern Virginia between 2011 and 2013. Court documents indicate Miller made more than $340,000 in the scheme, keeping half of the money that was paid to her prostitutes.

Prosecutors sought a 30-year sentence for Miller at Friday’s sentencing hearing in Alexandria, saying she threatened to turn women in to immigration authorities if they tried to quit.

Defense attorneys asked for a six-year term, saying that was more in line with punishments handed out for similar crimes.
