BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A sprawling outdoor ice rink is now open on Buffalo’s transforming waterfront.

The Ice at Canalside opened Thursday evening, becoming the biggest outdoor rink in the state - larger than two National Hockey League rinks. It is surrounded by walking paths and kiosks selling warm nuts, hot cocoa, pretzels and craft beer.

In addition to ice skates, visitors can rent ice bikes and there are plans for curling and broom ball throughout the winter.

The design and location of the $20 million project are meant to emphasize Buffalo’s history as the terminus of the Erie Canal. In the warmer months, the replica canalway will hold water.

The project was funded by the state, New York Power Authority and National Grid.
