COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio State University student who was run over by a dump truck on campus and lost a leg will receive $500,000 and free tuition in a settlement.

Freshman James Hughes was riding his bike to class in September 2013 when he was hit by the dump truck near the entrance to a construction site. The then-18-year-old lost his right leg and suffered severe damage to his pelvis.

Under the settlement announced Friday, Hughes and his family agreed to drop all pending claims and not file any future claims involving the accident.

Hughes and his family previously sued the university, the driver of the dump truck and 10 contractors hired by the university, alleging they failed to keep students safe.
