WOODMERE, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York volunteer firefighter is in critical condition after apparently falling into a basement fighting a fire on Long Island.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1AOxYbh ) reports the firefighter, who was not immediately identified, was injured at a blaze in Woodmere. The fire was reported at about 4 a.m. Friday.

Police said two other firefighters suffered minor injuries that did not require medical attention.

Officials say the injured firefighter was found amid debris in the basement of the home.

Woodmere Fire Chief Leonard Cherson said no one realized the critically injured firefighter was missing. He said volunteers found the firefighter purely “by chance.”

Officials suspect he fell from a first-floor collapse.

Police said the firefighter was in “cardiac arrest” when found - and later was in critical but stable condition.
