TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The city of Tucson says it is doubling its parking meter rates in the downtown area.

It is also installing meters in the Fourth Avenue Business District for the first time, city officials said in a news release.

The downtown meter rate will increase to $1 per hour downtown starting Jan. 5. The meters along Fourth Avenue will be installed in mid-January.

The city says it is switching out old, coin-operated meters for solar-powered ones that accept debit and credit cards. Drivers will also soon be able to use a new mobile application to pay for parking.

The installation of 500 new meters downtown and near the University of Arizona will begin Dec. 22. Another 500 meters will be installed later in the month or early next year.
