HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (AP) - Nearly 25,000 holiday food boxes have been prepared for needy families in the Detroit area as part of the UAW-Ford Boxes of Love giveaway.

UAW-Ford volunteers will distribute some boxes Saturday in Highland Park. Others have been delivered to churches, senior-assisted living homes and community groups.

This is the second year of the program. The partnership between the United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Co. bought more than $750,000 in items for the giveaway.

Each box will have a turkey, boxed stuffing and macaroni and cheese, vegetables and cake mix. About 20,000 were given away last year.

UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles says “there is a social obligation and drastic need for giving, especially this time of the year.”

More than 200 volunteers helped assemble the food boxes.

“Planning widespread giving efforts like this takes a lot of organizing, planning and people to dedicate their time to seeing it through, but the results are always rewarding,” said Bill Dirksen, Ford’s vice president of Labor Affairs. “Last year, we heard several stories that confirmed we were doing the right thing. So, this year, we are going to help thousands more.”
