BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The Burleigh County sheriff says a $70 million construction project on a two-county jail will soon be ready for contract bidding.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1AakU0j ) Sheriff Pat Heinert says the new Bismarck-area jail for Burleigh and Morton counties is likely to start advertising bids on Jan. 5. The bid deadline is expected by Feb. 18.

Construction will start in spring 2015 and the jail is expected to start operating by January 2017. Early site work was completed this fall so the building can be enclosed by next winter.

Businesses in both counties started collecting a temporary half-cent sales tax in October to fund the construction. Voters approved the tax due to overcrowding in county jails.

The new jail will hold about 475 inmates according to gender and security needs.
