HOUSTON (AP) - The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says a training officer has fatally shot a man who fired at the officer and a probationary sheriff’s deputy.

Sheriff’s deputy Thomas Gilliland says the deputies responded Monday to a report of a suspicious person at a home. He says paramedics were called at about the same time to the neighboring house for a woman with an unspecified medical emergency.

Gilliland says the deputies saw the suspect in the backyard of the home with the injured woman. He says the man fired two shots at the deputies as they approached him.

The training officer fired back and the suspect died at the scene. The deputies weren’t injured.

The woman was hospitalized in critical condition.

Their identities haven’t been released.
