BREVARD, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say three children were injured after an 85-year-old driver hit them as they tried to get on their school bus in Transylvania County.

Transylvania County Schools Superintendent Jeff McDaris told local media the students are expected to recover. He says the 15 children on the bus were horrified to see the wreck.

Troopers said the Brevard Elementary School bus had its red lights on and stop sign out around 7:30 a.m. Friday on U.S. 276 when Floyd Hipps didn’t slow down and hit the students.

Authorities say the bus was stopped on a half-mile straightaway on the curvy, mountain road.

Troopers say Hipps had no previous violations before being charged Friday with felony failure to stop for a stopped school bus. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
