OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - Friends, teammates and family members crowded into an Opelika church Saturday to remember slain Auburn football player Jakell Mitchell.

Al.com (https://bit.ly/16DUQBl ) reports that Greater Peace Baptist Church had to open up the gymnasium and its family life center for people to listen to the funeral services.

Auburn University football coach Gus Malzahn was among those that spoke. He recalled Mitchell’s competitiveness and positive attitude. Auburn teammates carried Mitchell’s casket out of the church.

Mitchell, a redshirted freshman, died after being shot at Tiger Lodge, an off-campus apartment complex last Sunday. Police arrested Markale Hart, a 22-year-old from Camp Hill, and charged him with Mitchell’s murder.
