PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois man who fled from a courthouse during his burglary trial has been sentenced to 21 years in prison.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/1Aqb3oF ) that 41-year-old Brian D. Patterson was sentenced Friday for drilling open a safe at a Peoria restaurant. During his arrest, police found nearly $10,000 in cash at his home.

Patterson had been free on bail during his October trial and attended each hearing. But when the jury began deliberating, Patterson left and failed to return to hear the guilty verdict.

Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Marshals tracked him down about eight hours later. Patterson tried again to flee but injured his ankle and was captured.
