VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A man has pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of a Ventura County couple and their unborn child at their Beach House five years ago.

The Ventura County Star (https://bit.ly/16wm39e) reports Friday that 25-year-old Joshua Packer will no longer face the death penalty after pleading to killing Brock Husted and his wife Davina Husted, who was pregnant. He’ll get life in prison without parole when he’s sentenced Feb. 6.

Prosecutors had previously refused the agreement and insisted on the death penalty.

It’s not clear why they changed course. The California Supreme Court had ordered a hearing on whether the top prosecutor should be removed from the case because his children had spent time with the defendant in a church youth group years ago.

Authorities say Packer entered the couple’s house in Faria Beach in May, 2009 and stabbed them to death.
