SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 36-year-old man has been charged with automobile homicide in a cyclist’s death in South Salt Lake.

Peter Wilcox of Salt Lake City was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with the lone felony count in the death of 50-year-old Mitchell Bennett.

Wilcox is accused of hitting Bennett’s bicycle with his Saturn while driving late at night on Sept. 25.

Bennett suffered severe neck, head and spine injuries and later died at a hospital.

Police say Bennett was riding his bicycle with his lights on, and Wilcox initially denied driving the Saturn when confronted by officers.

Investigators say Wilcox had a blood-alcohol content about three times the legal limit.

Bennett was an avid cyclist who raced and competed nationally since childhood.
