VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A Ventura County jury has found a Bakersfield man of raping and killing a woman in 1979.

Jurors deliberated for about a day before convicting 65-year-old Clark Russell guilty Friday of the first-degree murder of Alma Zuniga of Oxnard, who was 23 when she was killed and left in a shallow grave 35 years ago.

The case was unsolved for nearly 30 years until a sheriff’s task force re-examined the evidence in 2005 and matched DNA from the crime scene with Russell.

Zuniga’s family members cried when the verdict was read. They included her son who was just 1 ½ years old when she was killed.

Jaime Zuniga tells the Ventura County Star (https://bit.ly/1wVuzqO) he has a “sense of relief” but also an “empty space” where his mother should be.
