HALIFAX, N.C. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to life in prison in the killings of two people in Halifax County, including a mother shot while she held her baby in her arms.

Court officials told the Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids (https://bit.ly/1AR4BoJ ) that Jimmie Lee Mason Jr. pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of murder. He was 19 at the time of the killings in September 2011.

Authorities say Mason planned to steal marijuana from 38-year-old Thomas Davis, shooting him when he turned his back while in 26-year-old Jennilee Foster’s home.

Investigators say Foster ran into the room holding her baby to see what happened, and Mason shot her. He came back a few minutes later after hearing Foster scream for help and shot her one more time. The baby wasn’t hurt.
