PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix police official who oversees community outreach has retired a day after the police chief’s firing.

City officials announced Friday that assistant to the police chief Gerald Richard is retiring and will be replaced by Marchelle Franklin.

Franklin has been serving in the city’s aviation department as deputy aviation director for community development.

The change comes a day after City Manager Ed Zuercher fired Chief Daniel Garcia for insubordination. Garcia held an unauthorized news conference Thursday to ask the city for a two-year contract.

Unions representing Phoenix police officers sought a vote of no confidence in Garcia last month, citing a loss of credibility.

Acting Chief Joe Yahner says Franklin is the perfect person to assist with outreach during what’s been a pivotal time in the Phoenix community.
