SAN YSIDRO, N.M. (AP) - Authorities have identified the driver and passenger killed in a crash on U.S. 550 in Sandoval County after a pursuit by law enforcement was called off.

New Mexico State Police said Friday that 30-year-old Barbara M. Arriola and 33-year-old Anna Kauska, both from Albuquerque, died at the scene of the Thursday night’s collision.

They say the driver of the other vehicle, 68-year-old Jack Mills of Farmington, remains in critical condition.

According to investigators, Arriola was driving a Chevrolet Impala without headlights and weaving in and out of traffic.

Santa Ana police initially followed the vehicle but then canceled the pursuit because it was getting too dangerous.

Authorities say a Sandoval County Sheriff’s deputy later saw the vehicle collide head-on with Mills’ Chevrolet Corvette.

The incident is still under investigation.
