RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A surprise light snow has fallen across parts of northern North Carolina.

The National Weather Service said the snow should turn to all rain by noon Saturday. No accumulation was expected.

Light snow started falling Saturday morning around Winston-Salem and spread east to Raleigh and Durham. Temperatures remained above freezing, preventing the snow from sticking.

Forecasters had expected the snow falling from the clouds to evaporate or melt before hitting the ground, but the snow was heavier than expected and managed to make it through the atmosphere.

Light snow and freezing rain was also falling in the North Carolina mountains Saturday morning. Forecasters expected the winter precipitation to end in all but the highest peaks by noon.
