HONOLULU (AP) - A swimmer in distress was rescued by a Coast Guard crew after he was swept out to sea from a beach on Kauai.

The helicopter crew was on a routine mission when they got word that someone had written S.O.S. in the sand at Hanakapiai Beach.

The crew flew to the area and looked for signs of distress. They spotted a man who had been pulled off shore by a rip current and needed help.

The crew lowered a rescue basket to the swimmer and he climbed in and was hoisted up to the helicopter.

They flew the man to Lihue Airport Friday where he was transferred to emergency medical responders.

The Coast Guard reminds beachgoers to know their limits and to visit beaches that are staffed by lifeguards.
