FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) - People interested in attending the University of Maine Farmington will no longer have to pay a $40 application fee.

The school says that eliminating the fee charged when students apply to the school is designed to create a “level-playing field” for all prospective students.

Officials say it’s the only school in the University of Maine System that allows all prospective students to apply for free.

The new policy will kick in on Jan. 1. The school says that any first-year, transfer or international students who have already applied to the school for the 2015 spring and fall semesters will be reimbursed.
