LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Benfica beat bottom side Gil Vicente 1-0 at home to restore its six-point lead in the Portuguese league on Sunday.

Argentine midfielder Nicolas Gaitan scored the winner on the half-hour mark.

Benfica leads Porto by six points and Guimaraes by nine entering the winter break.

Gil Vicente’s Diogo Viana was sent off with two yellow cards in stoppage time.

Gil Vicente remained winless through 14 rounds this season.

Also, Carlos Mane’s 51st-minute goal gave fourth-place Sporting Lisbon a 1-0 win at Nacional.

Sporting played from the 77th with 10 after Adrien Silva received his second booking.

The league resume on Jan. 4.
