SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Five people are dead and dozens have been left homeless after a fire at a Spartanburg County apartment complex.

Whitney Fire District Chief Shawn Petras tells local media outlets that crews were called to the Southern Pines Apartments at around 12:30 Saturday morning.

Petras said the building was up in flames when firefighters arrived.

The coroner says three of the victims are children. Autopsies were scheduled for Sunday, and names have not been released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
