WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Police Chief Cathy Lanier says the fatal shooting of two police officers in New York is “shocking and reprehensible.”

Lanier was responding to the shooting Saturday of two officers who were sitting in their marked police car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. The officers were shot by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who went on to kill himself.

Lanier said in a statement Sunday that “the execution of two young police officers doing nothing more than sitting in their car is shocking and reprehensible.” She says the shootings are a “tragic reminder that police officers are vulnerable at all times; simply because of the uniform we wear.”
