MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering safety tips for people who fish on the ice this winter.

Game Warden Major Dennis Reinhardt says ice fishing can be safe and fund when it has been cold enough to form good, solid ice on the state’s lakes and pond.

The first tip for anglers is to keep their vehicles on shore. Every year several motor vehicles go through the ice on Vermont lakes, and people have drowned.

Other tips include:

- Tell others where you are going and when you expect to return.

- Wear a personal flotation device and don’t fish alone.

- Be wary of ice and carry a set of hand spikes to help you pull yourself back onto the ice should you fall through.
