AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine officials are encouraging residents to check to make sure that charities are legitimate before donating this holiday season.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage says that criminals are especially active during the holidays in trying to take advantage of the generosity of others.

Officials say residents should check with the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation to ensure that a charitable organization is licensed with the state.

Commissioner Anne Head says that residents should also keep receipts of donations, never send cash or wire money when asked to and report any concerns they may have with the state or law enforcement officials.
