JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation says harvest weight limits in Mississippi won’t change when U.S. Route 78 becomes Interstate 22.

Mississippi allows harvest loads of up to 84,000 pounds. The general limit for the interstate will be 80,000 pounds.

Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert says in a news release that the lower limit would have severely crippled agricultural transport along the highway.

He says Mississippi’s delegation got the exemption for the 113 miles of the highway in Mississippi enacted as part of the $1.1 trillion appropriation bill passed by Congress last week.

The exemption states that no limit set for the interstate system will affect any vehicle that is in the Mississippi stretch and would have legally operated there before the highway became an interstate.
