BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Several Burlington area nonprofit agencies are getting surprise checks from Vermont’s unclaimed property fund for money that has been turned over to the state.

The unclaimed property includes misplaced savings or investments, insurance policies, abandoned security deposits, and uncashed tax refunds or paychecks.

The state treasurer’s office says the money becomes unclaimed after a business or nonprofit loses contact with a customer for a certain number of years.

State Treasurer Beth Pearce will be giving checks to several nonprofit agencies on Monday afternoon.
