DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware authorities say two policemen are on paid leave after they fatally shot a man who pointed a pellet gun at them.

Dover Police say before the officers arrived at the apartment of 52-year-old James Long he called a crisis center line and said he planned to commit “suicide by cop.” Police say Sunday’s call is not the first time Long had made similar threats.

Police say when officers entered Long’s apartment Sunday he displayed what appeared to be a firearm and pointed it at officers, who fired. The gun was later determined to be a pellet or BB gun that resembled a handgun.

Police said Long had also booby-trapped his apartment with an improvised explosive device designed to mix chemicals that create a toxic gas. An investigation is ongoing.
