GRAFTON, Va. (AP) - A York County man faces a second-degree murder charge stemming from the fatal shooting of another man.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office says investigators believe 21-year-old Brandon Bartlett mistook the victim for a deer.

The sheriff’s office tells media outlets that 68-year-old David W. Ware Jr. was found dead Friday evening in marsh reeds next to Bartlett’s residence in the Grafton area.

Deputies also found a shotgun that hadn’t been fired. The sheriff’s office says investigators believe Ware was hunting a fox that had been killing his chickens.
