ORONO, Maine (AP) - The University of Maine is establishing a fund to benefit its men’s ice hockey program.

The university says hockey coach Red Gendron and friends established the Grant Standbrook Maine Hockey Forever Fund in the fall. The fund honors former coach Grant Standbrook. Athletics director Karlton Creech says the fund “will ensure long-term stability for the program.”

UMaine’s hockey team has won two NCAA national championships, in 1993 and 1999, and competes in Hockey East. University officials say the fund hopes to raise $7 million for an endowment for the hockey program.
