CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) - A former police officer in the southwestern Colorado town of Cortez has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of child sexual assault.

The Cortez Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1E4Ucfd ) 29-year-old Ryan Carter entered his pleas Thursday and is scheduled to go to trial in April. He is accused of having three sexual encounters with the girl in June and July when she was 14.

An arrest affidavit says the girl told investigators Carter warned her not to tell anyone about their alleged relationship or he could lose his job and would not be able to see his children.

Carter also is accused of sending inappropriate text messages to the girl, now 15. He resigned after his arrest in June.
