DEMING, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say eight members of a family managed to escape a fire that destroyed a century-old home near the northwest Washington community of Deming.

The Bellingham Herald reports (https://is.gd/ps1jpA ) that no people were injured and four dogs also escaped the flames early Monday. Three puppies housed in a detached garage died.

Two other children were sleeping elsewhere over the weekend.

The newspaper says 51-year-old Jeff George Sr. spotted a small fire in the garage but focused first on rousing the rest of the family instead of fighting the flames. By the time everyone was out, the fire was out of control.

Whatcom County Fire District 1 Chief Mel Blankers says the garage was engulfed in flames and the fire had reached the house when fire crews arrived.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Monday.

Deming is northeast of Bellingham.
