AZTEC, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate at the San Juan County Detention Center is dead and it appears to be a suicide.

County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the jail about noon Monday about an unresponsive inmate.

They say it appears 53-year-old Stephen Freeman of Bloomfield took his life by hanging.

Officials say Freeman lived alone in the jail cell.

They say video surveillance showed Freeman was visually checked through the cell window by jail staff about one hour beforehand and appeared fine at that time.
