GONZALES, La. (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies have arrested an Ascension Parish man accused of taking his 5-year-old daughter hostage and shooting their family dog.

After staying up all night drinking with a friend, deputies say Danny Ray Reding fired his .22 caliber revolver four times Saturday, shooting his dog, a bulldog-pit bull mix.

Sheriff Mike Waguespack tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1Ay66dw) Reding also fired one shot in the direction of his friend, whom he did not hit.

Waguespack says Reding then locked himself and his 5-year-old daughter in an upstairs bedroom. When deputies arrived, the sheriff says Reding tried to flee.

Deputies say Reding’s daughter was rescued unharmed and the dog survived the gunshot injury.

Reding was booked on several charges including attempted second-degree murder.

It was unclear whether he has an attorney.
