AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry has set a special election for Jan. 13 to fill the vacant Texas House District 13 seat.

Veteran state Rep. Lois Kolkhorst vacated the seat after winning a Texas Senate special election earlier this month to replace Comptroller-elect Glenn Hegar.

Candidates for the special election must file applications with the office of the Secretary of State no later than Dec. 29.

The early voting period begins Jan. 5 for the seat, which represents residents living in an area located between Austin and Houston.

The 2015 legislative session begins Jan. 13.
