LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The University of Kentucky has landed a grant to fund a new graduate scholars program in mathematics.

UK officials say the $559,626 National Science Foundation grant will be dispersed through July 2019.

The school says the Graduate Scholars in Mathematics program will support incoming math graduate students at UK, including first-generation and Appalachian students. The program will focus on the first two years of doctoral study, with a goal of helping to build greater diversity among mathematicians.

UK President Eli Capilouto says it will broaden access for underrepresented students interested in math.

The program will start in the fall of 2015. UK says it will provide rigorous pre-professional training in advanced math. It will also give participants an early introduction to research in math.
