FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department officials say routine bridge maintenance will require lane closures on an Interstate 540 bridge near Fort Smith.

Crews will be working on the I-540 bridge over the Arkansas River between Fort Smith and Van Buren. The work will reduce southbound traffic to one lane. Maximum load widths will be restricted to 12 feet.

The southbound outside lane will be closed on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting.

This bridge was constructed in 1967. It’s 3,396 feet long and 66 feet wide.

State transportation official say motorists should exercise caution when approaching and traveling through all highway work zones.
