MANHASSET, N.Y. (AP) - A firefighter who was critically injured while battling a blaze on Long Island five days ago has died.

Nassau County fire officials tell Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1vaxyaH ) that 43-year-old Joseph Sanford Jr., died Tuesday at North Shore University Hospital.

Sanford had been on a ventilator since the fire at a home in Woodmere. About 200 volunteers from more than a dozen departments had responded to the blaze on Central Avenue.

The 17-year veteran of the Inwood Fire Department Sanford was discovered in the basement after a first-floor collapse.
