BUCKSPORT, Maine (AP) - Maine labor officials say a shuttering Bucksport paper mill will pay its laid-off employees half of their severance by Jan. 8 and the rest by mid-March.

Employees at the Verso Paper mill are entering their final pay period as the mill has announced plans to complete a shutdown by the end of the month. Maine lawmakers had been urging the company to issue the severance pay swiftly.

Officials say a Tuesday legal order states the second half of the severance must be paid on either the fifth business day after the competition of any sale of the mill or by March 19. They say the total payments will be at least $18 million.

The mill’s closure is putting more than 500 workers out of a job.
