LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - A Casper man has pleaded not guilty to a criminal charge in connection with the death of a University of Wyoming student.

Dalton Williams is charged with second-degree murder or an alternative charge of manslaughter in the death of UW student Joe McGowan. Filing the charges alternatively means that Williams could be convicted of one of the charges but not both.

UW student Joe McGowan died a day after police say he tried to break up a fight Halloween night. Prosecutors accuse Williams of punching McGowan, who then fell and hit his head.

The Laramie Boomerang reports (https://bit.ly/1zu2D0y) that the 20-year-old Williams entered his not-guilty plea at his arraignment Monday in District Court.
