MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban new York man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges including assaulting a police officer.

George Towns of Inwood, on Long Island, pleaded guilty to assault, menacing a police officer, weapons and other charges in May. He was sentenced on Tuesday.

Prosecutors say Towns threatened an Inwood man with a handgun in February 2012. Two days later, police say he fired gunshots at a house party.

Detectives later investigated the incidents and approached Towns. Police say he pulled a gun and pointed at them. At one point they say he held a gun to a female detective’s head. Officers shot Towns three times, but he fled.

He was apprehended a short time later.

The female officer was treated for a back injury.
