NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A New Haven police spokesman says officers will work in pairs following the fatal shootings of two New York City policemen.

Spokesman David Hartman tells The New Haven Register (https://bit.ly/1ADI6FT ) that Police Chief Dean Esserman has directed that patrol officers work in pairs. Hartman says there’s no timetable for Esserman’s order. “We expect to work in pairs for some time,” he said.

Hamden Police Chief Thomas Wydra said he has not ordered patrol officers to work in teams but tht the department is considering it.

He said police officials are encouraging officers to take extra care because, he said, “we are an obvious target.”

New York police Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were ambushed Saturday by Ismaaiyl Brinsley who killed himself as police closed in.
