NEW YORK (AP) - The mother of the man who ambushed and killed two New York City police officers says he’d had psychological problems all his life, but his family never had any indication he would attack police.

Ismaaiyl (IHSH’-mayl) Brinsley’s mother tells the Daily News (https://nydn.us/1zcYJUF ) in a story published Tuesday that she’s horrified and “deeply sorry” about what her son did.

Shakuwra Dabre says her 28-year-old son made suicide attempts starting at age 13, was institutionalized and was on and off antidepressants for years. She says that he rebuffed his family’s pleas to get help and that she last spoke to him in July.

Police say Brinsley vowed online to kill officers before he shot Officers Wenjian Liu (WEHN’-jihn LOO’) and Rafael Ramos (rah-fy-EHL’ RAH’-mohs) Saturday. Brinsley then killed himself.
