LIONS BAY, British Columbia (AP) - A young girl was struck and killed by a rockslide while hiking with her family Monday on Unnecessary Mountain at Lions Bay, on the British Columbia coast just north of Vancouver.

Martin Colwell of Lions Bay Search and Rescue says it appears a slope beside a creek gave away, probably because of heavy rain, and buried the girl under boulders and dirt.

Colwell says her family tried to dig her out but the girl died of her injuries, despite the efforts of paramedics in the rescue team.
