MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy has been involved in the recent thaw in relations between the United States and Cuba - in more ways than one.

Last week, Leahy traveled to Cuba to accompany American Alan Gross as he was freed from prison in the island nation and returned to the United States. Leahy had been in talks with Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro, as well as Pope Francis, about getting Gross released.

Now it’s come to light that Leahy also helped an alleged Cuban spy’s wife arrange for artificial insemination in Panama. The accused spy had been jailed in the United States until his recent release.

A Leahy aide told The Associated Press Monday that the lawmaker helped arrange Adriana Perez’s artificial insemination.
