NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse says his thoughts and prayers are with the families of two New York Police Department officers killed over the weekend and with the city’s residents. He says it’s a difficult time for them.

NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu (loo) and Rafael Ramos were ambushed Saturday by a man who vowed retaliation against police for the slayings of unarmed black men at the hands of white officers. The man later killed himself.

Whitehouse calls the killings of the two NYPD officers “tragic.” He says it serves as a reminder of the risk police officers take every day to protect communities “and of the quiet courage with which they face it.”
