RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) - A 70-year-old woman has died in a fire in Hoke County.

Two children in the home were rescued shortly after the fire around 8 a.m. Tuesday, The Fayetteville Observer (https://bit.ly/1CBiv2w ) reported.

Officials said Myrtle Brewer died in the fire.

Loren Chavez, 51, was able to get her 9-year-old grandson and 12-year-old granddaughter out of the home. Sheriff’s Maj. Freddy Johnson says Chavez was unable to get her mother-in-law out of the house because of the fire, heat and smoke.

Dan Harvey, 62, works at a nearby doctor’s office and was passing by and stopped to try to help.

From a window on the side of the home, he yelled into the smoke and could hear her yelling back, Harvey said.

“I couldn’t understand what she was saying, but she was responding,” Harvey said.

Firefighters found Brewer’s body near a window.

Johnson said Chavez was taken to the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville and was then transferred to the North Carolina Burn Center in Chapel Hill.

He says Chavez was in serious condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
