LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A company is pushing ahead with plans for a limestone quarry along the Wabash River near Lafayette, despite a county ordinance meant to block the project.

The Tennessee-based Rogers Group on Tuesday filed with Tippecanoe County officials a completed land use request for the rural site near the community of Americus, the Journal & Courier reported (https://on.jconline.com/1wFnUCs ).

Andy Williams, a Rogers Group vice president, said the company will seek zoning board approval for a quarry on the 524-acre site.

If the proposal wins approval, Williams said Rogers Group is ready for a legal fight over the ordinance approved by the county’s Board of Commissioners in July that prohibits stone quarries within a two-mile radius of 100 homes.

“Our position is we’ve been working on this since 2009, and the ordinance doesn’t apply to this project,” Williams said. “We were already in process before the ordinance was passed.”

Many residents of the area about 10 miles northeast of Lafayette have opposed the quarry plans, citing worries such as dust, truck traffic, blasting and property values.

The county’s Board of Zoning Appeals next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 28, but it isn’t clear whether the quarry proposal will be considered then.

County Commissioner David Byers said he expected county officials would defend the ordinance in court if Rogers Group won’t drop its quarry plans.

“Eventually, that’s what I figured it was going to come to,” Byers said. “They’re a big business with big lawyers, and big lawyers have big ideas. I’ve heard they’ve bullied their way through other communities. I hope it doesn’t come to that here.”
