DENVER (AP) - The family of a police officer hit by a car during a student protest in Denver says he has been able to speak to them for the first time since the accident.

Relatives of Officer John Adsit said in a statement Wednesday that he was able to speak with them after his 10th surgery since the Dec. 3 crash.

Adsit and three other bicycle officers were hit by a driver who apparently suffered a medical emergency as they monitored a protest of hundreds of students from Denver’s East High School. His family says his being able to speak was a Christmas gift to them.

The students were protesting a decision not to prosecute a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri in the death of an unarmed black man.
